Corowa Rowing Club had a huge weekend travelling to various State Championships across the weekend.

Wes took Paige Cooper and Julia Delaney down to Barwon to row at the Junior Schoolgirls State Championship of which the girls were competing in the Year 9 single scull.  Due to the high number of entries it was split into two divisions.  Both girls won their heat to make it to their respective finals.  Paige rowed a strong race to win GOLD in her division.  Julia rowed herself to a Silver Medal in the 2nd division. 

Nagambie hosted the Victorian State Championship; the club kicked off on Friday night with Matt Vogel and John Raschke both competing in the U21 time trails.  Matt was placed 2nd and John 3rd in the trails.  On Saturday they raced in the final and where Matt won his final, he was only awarded a Silver medal due to the time of the fastest sculler on Friday.  John finished 5th in the same final as Matt.

Saturday also saw the school based entries and our club was represented by Brad Pearsall in Single School Boys and Megan Vogel in the Single School Girls.  Both won their heats and then went on to win very convincingly in their finals – GOLD to both!

After this the rest of the club competitors made their way to Nagambie for the club racing on Sunday.  Sunday dawned bright and early with some vicious head winds ensuring it was going to be a hard day on the water.

The day started early with Brad Pearsall competing in the heat of the Under 19 Single Scull which he had an easy row to finish first.  Brad then went on to win GOLD in the final.

Paige Cooper & Megan Vogel were up next competing in the U17 single scull, with the girls both making it through to the final.  Both girls rowed well with Megan coming a close 2nd to win Silver and Paige finishing 4th.

Georgina Pearsall competed next in the Female D grade Single Scull – there were 6 heats with only the winner of each making the final, which Georgina finished, 2nd in heat to miss the final.

Broughton Underwood & Andrew MacDonald were next up in the D grade double scull again lots of competitors so the boys needed a win to make the final, but could only manage third in rough conditions.

The Female C Grade Coxed Quad Scull, made up by Amy & Julie Underwood, Paige Cooper, Megan Vogel and coxed by Taylor Lambert went out strong in their heat and finished first in a close finish.  The girls then competed in the final which was a great race and the girls pulled away over the last 200 metres to win by 8 seconds.  More GOLD for the club!

After lunch was more racing, in still consistent high head wind’s.  Matt Vogel and John Raschke were up in the B grade single scull with both boys making it to the final.  Matt rowed a strong race to finish 2nd to win a Silver medal with John finishing 5th in the final.

Amy Underwood was up in her C Grade Single scull and she was on fire, winning her heat by over 4 seconds and then went on with her great form and won the final – GOLD.

The female D Grade Double Scull was another hotly contested event with 28 crews entered.  Corowa had two crews with Georgina Pearsall and Julia Delaney teaming up against Sarah & Olivia Hughes.  Both crews were in separate heats but had to win their heat to make the final.  Georgina & Julia finished a close 2nd to miss out and the Hughes twins finished third in their first ever State Championship event.

Mother and daughter crew (Julie & Amy Underwood) then teamed up to compete in the C grade Double Scull to try to increase Amy’s medal count to three.  They won their heat to progress through to the final – here they were beaten by under 1 second.  Great race to pick up the Silver Medal.

The young girls then rowed in the D grade Coxed Quad Scull – Julia, Georgina, Sarah & Olivia coxed by Taylor Lambert – they had to place in the top 3 to make the final and they did it well finishing 2nd place in heat.  The girls fought hard in the final to finish in 4th place against some tough competition.

Andrew MacDonald competed in the D Grade Single Scull and he had to win the heat to make the final and Macca did just that.  So in the 2nd last race of the day he competed in the final to finish in 4th place.

Fergus Hamilton joined Brad Pearsall to compete in the Under 19 double scull and unfortunately due to 2 late scratching only competed against one other crew, the boys won GOLD easily by over 30 seconds. 

The boys then teamed up to race in the Male C Grade Coxed Quad Scull – Andrew MacDonald, Matt Vogel, John Raschke and Brad Pearsall coxed by Trent Brown.  This was a first and final and the boys went out strong and finished strong – winning GOLD!

Fergus Hamilton then competed in the U17 single scull, he rowed a great race to record a win over a field of 5 competitors – GOLD

Megan Vogel and Paige Cooper were next down the course in the Female U17 double scull showed why they will be competing at the Nationals in a few weeks rowing well in this event to take out the GOLD medal.

Even though the day was coming to an end and both coaches had very sore legs riding their bikes into a head wind all day to support their rowers, Robert “Dinga” Eyers still had to compete in the Male Masters Single scull – this race wasn’t classified as a State Championship as the Masters have their own competition in a few weeks.  Dinga went out at his own pace and settled in well to record a great win by over 100metres.

What a great achievement by Corowa Rowing Club – coming third in the overall medal count, beaten only by Mercantile and Melbourne rowing club – two powerhouse clubs.

It was great to see both new coxswains, Trent & Taylor both winning their first ever State Championships.

Brad with 4 Gold, Paige’s 3 gold and Megan’s 2 gold ensure that all are in great form as they prepare for the National Championships to be held in Sydney at the end of March.

Congratulations to Wes Canny and Robert Eyers who put in extraordinary amount of hours into training all the crews at the club.  Winning 10 Gold medals certainty sees their hard work pay off.

Racing started on Saturday morning in windy and choppy conditions with Brad Pearsall competing in a preliminary final for the School Boys single scull which he won easily.  That afternoon the same field of rowers were meant to take to the course to row the final, but Brad was the only one who braved the conditions so won just by rowing over the course.

Sunday saw club rowing and Brad started the day rowing in his Under 19 single scull first and final which he won convincingly over his competitors.  He then teamed up with Fergus Hamilton to compete in the U19 double scull which they won by over 200metres – great effort from Fergus who not only is only 15 years old but was his first time racing over 2000 metres.

President Robert “Dinga” Eyers was the last competitor of the weekend and competed in the Master single scull.  Dinga had to give a head start of 29 seconds to 2 other competitors who were older than him but he still managed to beat them as well as another competitor in the same age bracket.

The competition started on Saturday with the school girls regatta.
Galen college year 9 student Paige Cooper was entered in the year 10 single scull. The event had two heats with first through to the A final. After a strong start a battle was on hand between the Corowa and Nagambie sculler as Paige took an early lead. At the half way mark the scullers were level before the Nagambie sculler made her move to win by half a length. Paige next race was the B final and she showed she had learnt from her heat race to take the lead early and record a confidence building win.
Corowa high school year 8 student Julia Delaney was up next in the year 9 single scull with 2 heats first and second qualified for the final. Julia held on to the early leaders before she picked up her speed to row into second place and a spot in the A final. With 4 scullers in the final Julia's aim was for a top 3 finish. Julia got out to a great start and rowed a strong and controlled race to finish in a much deserved second place.
The second day of competition was overcast with a strong tail wind.
First up were  the C grade single scullers Amy Underwood and Julia Delaney. Julia was rowing up a grade and using the race for valuable experience with a large field of four heats first qualified for the final. Julia was able to hold on for half the race before finishing in 4th place. Amy was up next and continued her great form from the Moodemere regatta to take an early lead and hold on for a great win and a place in the final. The final was a tough battle with the early leader being challenged by Amy as she pushed all the way before falling one length short at the finish.
Broughton Underwood was up next in the D grade single scull with three scullers within two lengths of each other at the 500m mark. With the scullers making a surge for the finish line Broughton finished third in a tight race. Competing in the C final Broughton was sitting in third place with 300m to go before he powered to the line to claim the C final in a great race.
The under 17 single scullers Megan Vogel and Paige cooper were  up next over the 1500m course. Paige was in the first heat and was up against a quality school girl field. Dropping a length behind early Paige settled into a strong rhythm and worked her way in front to record a fantastic win and a spot in the final. Megan continued her great form on the Barwon River to take an early lead and record a great win and a place in the three crew final. The final saw the two Corowa scullers take control of the race with Megan showing her experience to take the win from Paige.
Julie Underwood was entered in the masters single and showed her hard work was paying of to take on a quality field and finish second recording a great time.
Julia was entered in her D grade single after lunch and after a slow start made her move through the field as she rowed through the early leaders to take out the heat and a place in the final. The final was a tight battle with the crews level at the half way mark as Julia gave her best to finish 4th and show her effort at training is paying off.
The final race for the club was the Under 17 double scull with Megan and Paige teaming up. The girls showed the opposition how fast they are going to take the lead and never be troubled to record a big win.]]><![CDATA[defibrillator TRAINING - JANUARY 2015]]>Sun, 08 Feb 2015 22:48:14 GMThttp://www.corowarowingclub.com.au/blog/defibrillator-training-january-2015 Chris Welsh from Australian Medical & Emergency Management Group was at the club on Wednesday 28th to train 21 of our members in the use of our new Zoll AED Defibrillator which was donated to the club by The Corowa Lions Club. This machine is the best technology available and is something we hope we never need but it is reassuring that we have one on hand.

Saturday saw the age based races and Brad Pearsall started the weekend off competing in the Under 19 single scull – he was up against last year’s National team mate in the heat with only 1st going through to final, it was a great race with Brad just missing out progressing through to final.

Brad then competed in the U23 single scull race along with Matt Vogel & John Raschke.  There were three heats with our competitors separated into separate heats.  Racing was very competitive with Brad winning his heat to get into the final, whereas both John & Matt finished 2nd to miss out.

Brad then competed in the final of the U23 single which he rowed a great race over the 1500 metre course to record a win.

Sunday was all about club rowing.  Brad, Matt & John all started the campaign off racing in the B Grade Single Scull in which they were placed in different heats again with only 1st going through.  Brad was in the first heat up against the winner of the previous days U19 single scull who beat him by a foot placing Brad in 3rd place.  John was in second heat and rowed a strong race to take it out going into the final.  Matt was in the third heat and he finished 2nd in a field of four so a great effort.
John then raced in the final but was unsuccessful.

Brad then rowed in the Open Single scull where he finished third in the heat ending his weekend of rowing.

Matt & John teamed up to compete in B grade double scull in which they came 2nd in the heat to progress through into the final – which the boys rowed a fantastic race to win!

Robert Eyers then had an opportunity to race in the Masters Single Scull which was raced over 1000 metres.  Dinga had a great start to lead from the front and never looked challenged – winning by over 3 boat lengths.

All rowers came home with a medal so a great weekend.

The start of the 2000m races were set for Nagambie at the venue for the Victorian State Championships to be held in March 2015.

Corowa’s crews have been hard at training and were ready for the challenge of the longer distances.
Matt Vogel set up the first win with a dominate win in the under 21 scull, to lead all the way against the Melbourne based scullers over the 2000m course.
Bradley Pearsall showed his great training form was paying off to dominate the Under 17 events. In the single scull he showed his class to row a perfect race in the heat giving nothing away to his opposition before opening up in the final and record the day's biggest win. He paired up with doubles partner Jack Delaney and in the first and final were too strong for the Essendon combination to record a comfortable win. The pair then teamed up with Matt Vogel, Andrew MacDonald and coxswain Taylor Lambert to win the C grade quad scull.
Andrew then jumped in his D grade single scull to take out the heat before rowing a great race in the 6 crew final to lead all the way to record a much deserved win. Andrew teamed with Jack, Broughton Underwood, Dale Melotto and coxswain Trent Brown in the D grade quad scull. With 4 crews in the final the Corowa combination held their own to record a third place. It was a pleasing result with Dale and Trent competing at a Rowing Victoria regatta for the first time and gaining some valuable experience.
The females were well represented at the regatta with Paige Cooper and Julia Delaney teaming up in the D grade double scull to come from behind to win their heat with first and second qualifying a close final was expected.
Corowa were also represented by Sarah and Olivia Hughes and they produced a great race in the heat to qualify for the 6 crew final. The final was a great race with the early leading crew from Powerhouse being challenged by the Corowa combination who moved along side before Julia and Paige powered away in the final 250m to record a great win. The Hughes girls rowed their best race in the final to record a fantastic 3rd place over the 1000m course. The girls teamed up with Georgina Pearsall for the D grade quad scull with Sarah in the coxswains seat, the girls rowed a controlled race to qualify for the final. The final was a tight race as the early leader was holding a 3/4 length lead at the half way mark before the Corowa Crew made their move chasing down the crew before falling a meter short at the finish line. A fantastic race and a real confidence builder for the remainder of the season.
Julia and Georgina were entered in the single scull with Georgina in a tough heat she missed out on the A final but showed great form to take out the B final. Julia has shown great form at training and rowed a well timed race to claim 2nd and a place and a spot in the A final. The final saw a strong final line up with Julia holding her own to come 6th and prove the hard work is paying off.
Megan Vogel took on the 2000m course in the under 17 single competing against her teammate from last seasons Nationals the inform Skye Froebel. Megan worked hard and put in a solid performance to take 2nd place in the 4 crew final as she prepares for the upcoming regattas. Megan teamed with Paige in the Open double scull with the aim of Paige competing in her first 2000m event. The Corowa combination were well placed and made a strong finish to claim 3rd place 2.5 lengths behind the winners and a confidence race for the upcoming under 17 2000m events after Christmas.

Megan teamed with Sally Maclean, Cherie Collins, Bron Collins and cox Taylor Lambert for the C grade quad scull, with large entries first 3 from each heat qualified for the final. The Corowa girls won their heat and finished 4th in the final and were happy with their row.
Julie and Amy Underwood teamed up for the C grade double scull, the mother daughter combination won their heat with a well rowed race. The final was a close encounter with the Corowa combination falling behind early before mounting a strong finish to fall half a length short on the line.
Amy was excited to row the under 19 scull over the 2000m course against a quality field, Amy finished 3rd in the 6 crew final with a great row.
The clubs last event for the day was the mixed quad scull Matt Vogel, Robert Eyers, Julie and Amy Underwood coxswain Taylor Lambert in the 6 crew first and final the crew had a great row to finish 3rd. The regatta was a great success with the club recording 6 firsts, 4 second places and 5 third places showing the club is well positioned as we prepare for the major regattas after Christmas.

Corowa Rowing Club held the annual Santa Regatta on the river with crews from Yarrawonga ,Rutherglen and Corowa competing.

 There were 14 events allowing all levels of rowers the opportunity to compete with many entered in their first regatta.


The youngest entries competed in the Quad scull with the crew from Rutherglen rowing a controlled race to take out first place, Jayden, Matthew, James, Jake cox Isaac.
Corowa took out the double scull with Brayden Harris and Trent Brown with Trent backing it up to take out the single scull.
In the junior scull Rutherglen sculler Isaac led all the way to take out the event.
Corowa took out the quad scull in the open event with Andrew MacDonald, Bradley Pearsall, Dale Moretto, Brayden Harris cox Trent too strong for the Yarrawonga composite.
Jack Delaney teamed with Andrew to take out the double scull with Andrew taking out the single scull.
The first of the female events was the quad scull with the 2 Corowa crews in for a tight race, in a close finish Megan Vogel,Georgina Pearsall,Sarah Hughes,Georgia King cox Aiden won by a length.
The next races were the double sculls with Julia Delaney and Hannah Glenn rowing the straightest course to take out the win.
The open class saw Julia team up with Julie Underwood to take the early lead and hold onto claim first place.
The mixed event was a all Corowa race with John Raschke, Cherie Collins, Ding Eyers, Hannah Glenn cox Taylor Lambert claiming first place.
In the Open scull there were 3 Corowa scullers lined with Matt Vogel taking the early lead to hold of the fast finishing Bradley Pearsall.
Thanks for all the helpers on the day, Ben for cooking the B.B.Q, John and Cooky for starting the races and all the helpers who contributed to making the day a great success.

Corowa Rowing Club travelled to Geelong for the first of the school girl regattas.

With a slight head wind the scullers were confident of a strong showing over the 1500m and 1000 metre courses.

First event was the open division 2 over 1500m with 4 heats a strong field was entered. Corowa rower Amy Underwood competing for her school Geelong Grammar using a Corowa club boat Amy was in a tough heat. Amy showed her improved skills and fitness to row past the early leader at the half way mark to record a great win. In the final Amy was against the 3 other heat winners and was going to be in for a tough final. Amy took the lead from the start as she powered down the course to record a great win. A fantastic achievement as she was also entered in the Open 8 coming 3rd in the final.

Megan Vogel was up next in the Open div 1 with 2 heats first and second qualified for the final. Megan has had great success on the Barwon river and was keen to put in a strong showing. The heat was a tight race early with Megan taking the lead and rowing a controlled race to make the final. Four scullers lined up for the final and Megan took the lead from the start to take out the final and sets her up for another season as she prepares for the 2000m events.

The year 8 scullers were up next with Corowa represented by Paige Cooper and year 7 student Julia Delaney. For Julia it was her first race over the 1000m course and with a lot of rowing in the afternoon both girls needed to row a controlled race. Paige raced at Geelong last season and her knowledge paid off as she took the lead from the start and rowed a great race. Julia followed her race plan to grab 2nd place as she completed the 1000m course and was going to use the experience in her next 3 races. The final result remained the same with Paige grabbing the lead early and Julia improving from the heat to allow the Corowa girls to grab 1st and 2nd.

Both girls were entered in the year 9 single with 2 heats 1st and 2nd qualified for the final. Paige was in the first heat and was going to be tested by the older girls. Not to be overawed she rowed her race plan to take out the first heat. Julia lined up in heat 2 against the bigger girls but showed her hard work at training was paying off as she took the lead early and rowed a great race to lead all the way. Both girls were lined up for the last race of the day in the final as Paige continued her great form and took the lead as was never headed. Julia took the race up to the older girl as she made a real contest for 2nd place. Showing great discipline she pushed hard through the middle stages and mounted a real challenge before falling just short coming a confidence building 3rd place.

Please be aware that a social membership does not allow use of the gym equipment. 
A new membership form must be filled in even if renewing your current membership.
If you want to pay by direct debit than contact Stacey for bank details.

As you can see our membership fees are very low considering all we offer.  This is due to a few reasons.  Firstly we have some great sponsors on board with us.  The main reason is that our members are always ready to help out with our fundraising events especially the MRA weekend.  ]]>
